A Day in the Life at Odyssey

Elementary-aged children collaborating on a hands-on project-based learning activity in a bright classroom at Odyssey, a learner-driven school.

Inside a Typical Day at Odyssey: Purpose, Curiosity, and Joy in Action

Ever wonder what a typical day looks like inside a learner-driven, project-based microschool? At Odyssey: An Acton Academy, we blend freedom and structure to create a day full of purpose, curiosity, and joy for both our younger Sparks (ages 5-7) and our older Discoverers (8-12).

Our days are intentionally designed to foster independence, community, and a love of learning. Here’s a peek into how it all unfolds!

Morning Launch: Starting the Day with Inspiration

Our day begins with a 15-minute Launch—a time for big ideas, curiosity, and thought-provoking questions. This could be a story, a video, or a scenario that sparks discussion and sets the tone for the day.

Whether exploring kindness, courage, or historical dilemmas, learners are encouraged to think deeply and share their voices. Guides and Learners take turns leading these Socratic discussions.

Running Partners & Goal Setting

Next, learners connect with their Running Partners or teams for a quick check-in. They set personal goals, reflect on progress, and support one another in accountability.

These brief meetings help build leadership skills and remind learners that they’re in charge of their journey.

Core Skills: Personalized Learning Time

For about 90 minutes, Sparks and Discoverers dive into Core Skills, working at their own pace in reading, writing, and math.

  • Sparks may be practicing phonics, early reading, or basic math games.

  • Discoverers might be working on grammar, advanced writing, or tackling math challenges.

Our learners use tools like Chromebooks, hands-on materials, and personalized learning plans. “Teachers” serve as guides, not lecturers, helping each child grow at the right pace for them.

Communication & Civilization: Growing Character and Knowledge

Our schedule intentionally varies mid-morning:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: Learners focus on Communication Skills—often writing essays, crafting persuasive arguments, or practicing interpersonal communication, like offering apologies or resolving conflicts.

  • Tuesday and Thursday: It’s time for Civilization, where we explore history, cultures, and the decisions of historical figures. Discussions often center around moral dilemmas, helping learners develop empathy and critical thinking.

Lunch & Recess: Community and Play

We believe learning happens everywhere—even during play! Learners enjoy a 90-minute lunch and recess break, offering time for eating, socializing, creative play, and physical movement.

Afternoon Projects: Hands-On, Real-World Learning

After lunch, the school transforms into a hub of creativity and real-world problem-solving. Our afternoon projects vary by season and interest but might include:

  • Preparing for our annual Business Fair, where learners create products and run real businesses.

  • Working in our Community Garden, learning science and sustainability.

  • Exploring history through Acton Athens, a deep dive into ancient civilizations.

  • Discovering marine biology, art, technology, or social sciences.

These projects allow learners to apply knowledge in meaningful, hands-on ways, developing skills like collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

Art & Physical Development

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sparks and Discoverers also enjoy dedicated time for Art and Physical Development, nurturing both creative expression and physical wellness. It may seem like this is not enough, but through our projects, we are constantly using creative art skills. Our extended recess time is encouraging for learners to run and play games they are truly invested in.

Friday Fun: Town Hall & Scholar’s Choice

Fridays bring a special energy to Odyssey:

  • We hold a Town Hall Meeting, where learners discuss community issues within our studio, propose solutions, and practice democratic decision-making.

  • If they’ve met their weekly goals, the second half of Friday transforms into Scholar’s Choice—a time for passion projects, games, creative pursuits, or quiet reflection. It’s the perfect way to celebrate a week of hard work.

Why Our Day Matters

Our schedule isn’t about rigid periods or top-down teaching. It’s designed to help learners become curious, independent, and courageous problem-solvers.

Whether they’re six or twelve, Odyssey learners are building the skills—and the confidence—to navigate the real world.
